Purpose:

To keep the resident’s hair and scalp clean and healthy, to stimulate circulation in the scalp, and to treat conditions of the hair and scalp.

Equipment:

  • Comb and brush

  • Hair dryer

  • Shampoo

  • Rubber or plastic drawsheet

  • Shampoo trough

  • Bath towels

  • Cotton drawsheet

  • Cotton

  • Washcloth

  • Pitchers (2 or 3)

  • Bath blanket

  • Wash basin

Procedure:

I. Preparation:

  • Lower bed to flat position unless contraindicated. Place chair beside the head of the bed with a bath blanket and the wash basin on the seat.

  • Remove the pillow from the bed. Place the drawsheet under the resident’s head to protect the bedding.

  • Position the resident diagonally in the bed with their head close to the edge with the chair and pail. Remove clothing from upper chest and neck. Place bath towel around the neck. Turn the resident’s head to one side and brush, then turn to the other side and brush. Observe for abnormalities.

  • Wash and dry the comb to be ready after the shampoo.

  • Fill pitchers with warm water.

II. Shampooing:

  • Place shampoo trough under the resident’s head with the drain into the pail.

  • Give a washcloth to the resident to protect their eyes.

  • Rinse hair thoroughly, turning from side to side. Protect the ears.

  • Apply shampoo and gently massage from the scalp to the ends of the hair.

  • Rinse well, ensuring the back of the head has been thoroughly rinsed.

  • Towel dry the hair. Complete drying with a hair dryer if available.

III. Post-Shampoo:

  • Replace the resident’s clothing.

  • Brush, comb, and arrange the hair. Set in curlers if a dryer is used.

  • Clean all articles and return them to their proper place.

  • Position the resident comfortably with the call bell in reach.

Compliance and Review:

  • Ensure compliance with CMS guidelines and the State Operations Manual (SOM).

  • Regularly review and update procedures based on the latest clinical best practices and regulatory standards.

  • Conduct periodic training for staff on proper hair care techniques for residents in bed.
