Thera Beads Moist Heat Therapy

Thera Beads Moist Heat Therapy Policy 

Basic Responsibility 

Licensed Nurse/Therapist 

Goal 

  • To relieve pain. 

  • To relieve inflammation. 

  • To increase circulation. 

Equipment 

  • Towel 

  • Thera Beads Hot Pack to cover the area to be treated. 

  • Microwave oven. 

Procedure 

Note: Use wet heat applications cautiously on residents with circulatory impairment. 

  1. Preparation: 

  • Position the resident comfortably and provide support with pillows. 

  • Use a towel to provide a layer of protection and to prevent soiling. 

  1. Heating the Thera Beads: 

  • Fold the Thera Beads pack and heat it in a conventional microwave for approximately 45 seconds. 

  • Re-fold, rotate, and heat for an additional 45 seconds. 

  • After each heating interval, check the skin temperature monitor to ensure the temperature is within the therapy range (104-113 degrees F, as indicated on the white area of the strip). 

  • Always perform a touch test after each additional heating interval and before using the pack. 

  • Ensure the microwave is clean before use. 

  1. Application: 

  • Place the hot pack (covered by a towel) on the area to be treated. 

  • Observe the treated area at frequent intervals before, during, and after application. 

  • Treatment time should not exceed 30 minutes. 

  1. Post-Treatment: 

  • Remove the pack and inspect the treated area. 

  • Position the resident comfortably with the call light within reach. 

  • Return the Thera Beads pack to the storage area. If needed, surface clean with mild soap and water before storing. 

  1. Documentation: 

  • Document the type of treatment, length of treatment, and reason for treatment. 

  • Document the resident’s response and the effectiveness of the treatment. 

  • Document the condition of the resident’s skin before, during, and after treatment.
