Pulse Oximeter Policy

Pulse Oximeter Policy

Purpose:

To measure the percentage of oxygen saturation and pulse rate during stressful activities or at rest in residents who are known or suspected to have respiratory insufficiency. Additionally, to measure oxygen saturation in situations where oxygen is administered.

Procedure:

I. Preparation:

  • Turn on the oximeter according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

II. Application:

  • Insert the resident’s finger (preferably left or right index finger) completely into the sensor. The thumb is specifically not recommended for use with the finger clip sensor.

  • An ear probe may be used for residents with very poor peripheral perfusion.

III. Monitoring:

  • Ensure that the resident remains still during the measurement to obtain an accurate reading.

  • Observe the pulse oximeter display for oxygen saturation (SpO2) and pulse rate readings.

  • Document the readings as per the facility’s protocol.

Note:

The finger clip sensor is designed for spot check monitoring of adult patients or continuous monitoring for less than 30 minutes where patient movement is not expected.
