Nails, Care of (Finger and Toe)

Nails, Care of (Finger and Toe) 

Purpose: 

  • To provide cleanliness. 

  • To prevent the spread of infection. 

  • To prevent skin problems. 

Equipment: 

  • Nail clippers. 

  • Nail file. 

  • Basin with warm water. 

  • Nail brush. 

  • Towel. 

  • Lotion. 

Procedure: 

I. Finger Nail Care: 

  • Soak hands for five minutes in a basin of warm water. 

  • Scrub nails gently with a brush and remove hands from the basin. 

  • Place hands on a towel. Trim and clean nails; file smoothly. 

Note: Fingernails of diabetic residents are to be cut by a licensed nurse. 

  • Discard water, clean equipment, and wash your hands. 

II. Toe Nail Care: 

  • Obtain clean water and soak the resident’s feet. 

  • Scrub nails gently with a brush and remove feet from the basin. 

  • Place feet on a clean towel. Trim and clean nails; file smoothly. 

Note: Toenails of diabetic residents are to be cut by a podiatrist or a licensed nurse. 

III. Final Steps: 

  • Discard water and clean equipment. 

  • Wash your hands thoroughly. 

  • Apply lotion to the resident’s hands and feet as needed.
