Eye Compress (Clean)

Eye Compress (Clean) 

Purpose: 

To relieve inflammation and congestion, control hemorrhage, relieve pain and make the resident comfortable, and promote healing. 

Cold Compresses 

Equipment: 

  • Two washcloths 

  • Basin with water 

  • Ice 

  • Face towel 

Procedure: 

  1. Have the resident assume a comfortable position. 

  1. Place ice in the basin with water. 

  1. Moisten the cloths in the cold water and wring them dry. 

  1. Gently apply the cloths over the eyelid(s) and cheek(s). 

  1. Alternate the cloths every 30 to 60 seconds. 

  1. The duration and frequency of the treatment is as ordered by the physician. 

  1. After the treatment, gently and thoroughly dry the eyelid(s). 

Warm Compresses 

Equipment: 

  • Two washcloths 

  • Basin with water (not to exceed 110 degrees F) 

  • Face towel 

Procedure: 

  1. Have the resident assume a comfortable position. 

  1. Fill the basin with warm water, ensuring the temperature does not exceed 110 degrees F. 

  1. Moisten the cloths in the warm water and wring them dry. 

  1. Gently apply the cloths over the eyelid(s) and cheek(s). 

  1. Alternate the cloths every 30 to 60 seconds to keep them warm. 

  1. The duration and frequency of the treatment is as ordered by the physician. 

  1. After the treatment, gently and thoroughly dry the eyelid(s). 

Compliance and Documentation: 

  • Adhere to CMS guidelines and Requirements of Participation for Long-Term Care Facilities. 

  • Document the eye compress procedure, including the resident’s response and any observations, in their medical record. 

  • Note any abnormalities or difficulties encountered during the procedure. 

  • Regularly review and update techniques for applying eye compresses according to the latest clinical best practices and regulatory standards. 

  • Provide training to staff on proper eye compress procedures to ensure resident safety and comfort. 

  • Conduct regular audits to ensure compliance with this policy and address any gaps in practice or documentation.
