Blind Resident, Caring for

Caring for a Blind Resident

Purpose:

To maximize resident communication, provide for safety, and maintain resident dignity.

Procedure:

1. Communication and Interaction:

  • Identify yourself when you arrive.

  • Announce your intention to leave before you do so.

  • Speak clearly and slowly, with your mouth directed toward the resident.

  • Include the resident in conversations and introduce them to others involved in the conversation.

  • Take the time to explain what is happening around the resident and describe the environment.

  • 2. Assistance and Guidance:

  • Lead and never push the resident.

  • Tell the resident when you move an object from a familiar place.

  • Use the clock placement method to describe the location of each kind of food on a plate.

  • Go through a door ahead of the blind resident and indicate which way the door opens.

  • Place the resident’s hand on a chair or bed before they sit.

  • Stop completely before helping the resident up or down stairs.

  • 3. Safety Measures:

  • Always ensure that the environment is free of obstacles that may pose a hazard.

  • Ensure the resident knows where emergency exits and important facilities are located.

Documentation:

  • Record the date and time (or shift) as appropriate.

  • Document how well the resident is able to safely function in their environment and how well they accept their limitations.

  • Include any specific observations or incidents that occurred during the care period.

Compliance and Documentation:

  • Adhere to CMS guidelines and Requirements of Participation for Long-Term Care Facilities.

  • Ensure all procedures and interactions are documented accurately in the resident’s care plan.

  • Regularly review and update techniques for caring for blind residents according to the latest clinical best practices and regulatory standards.

  • Provide training to staff on proper procedures for caring for blind residents to ensure their safety, communication, and dignity.

  • Conduct regular audits to ensure compliance with this policy and address any gaps in practice or documentation.
