Enteral Feeding Tube De-Clogger 

Purpose: 

To safely and effectively de-clog enteral feeding tubes. 

Procedure: 

  1. Preparation: 

  • Select the right de-clogger (they are color coded for size and type). 

  1. Insertion: 

  • Insert the de-clogger carefully into the feeding tube until it reaches the blockage. 

  • Slowly rotate the de-clogger clockwise to dislodge the blockage. 

  1. Removal: 

  • Gently remove the de-clogger from the feeding tube. 

  1. Disposal: 

  • Discard the de-clogger after use as it is intended for single resident use only. 

  1. Documentation: 

  • Document the resident’s response to the procedure. 

  • Note the time of the procedure, the result, and any complications or observations in the resident's medical record. 

Compliance and Documentation: 

  • Adhere to CMS guidelines and Requirements of Participation for Long-Term Care Facilities. 

  • Document the de-clogging procedure, including the resident’s response and any observations, in their medical record. 

  • Note any abnormalities or difficulties encountered during the procedure. 

  • Regularly review and update techniques for de-clogging enteral feeding tubes according to the latest clinical best practices and regulatory standards. 

  • Provide training to staff on proper de-clogging procedures to ensure resident safety and comfort. 

  • Conduct regular audits to ensure compliance with this policy and address any gaps in practice or documentation.
