A1010N: Race - Other Pacific Islander, Step-by-Step

Step-by-Step Coding Guide for A1010N: Race – "Other Pacific Islander"

1. Review of Medical Records

Objective: Document the resident’s race based on their identification as "Other Pacific Islander," under the broader category of Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander.

Actions:

  • Review demographic data provided in the resident’s medical records.
  • Directly ask the resident if they identify as a Pacific Islander, ensuring they specify the specific group (e.g., Tahitian, Chuukese, or Fijian).
  • If the resident cannot respond, consult with a family member, caregiver, or legally authorized representative for confirmation.

2. Understanding Definitions

A1010N: Other Pacific Islander refers to individuals who identify with a Pacific Islander background other than the predefined groups (e.g., Native Hawaiian, Guamanian, or Samoan). This might include ethnicities such as Tongan, Fijian, or other Pacific Island cultures.

Example Scenario:

  • Resident A: A resident identifies as Fijian, which falls under the category of "Other Pacific Islander." This would be coded as A1010N: Other Pacific Islander.

3. Coding Instructions

Step-by-Step:

  • Step 1: Ask the resident if they identify as a Pacific Islander and request specifics on their ethnic group.
  • Step 2: If the resident identifies as a Pacific Islander but not specifically as Hawaiian, Guamanian, or Samoan, code A1010N.
  • Step 3: If the resident is unable to respond, seek information from family members or caregivers.
  • Step 4: If no one can confirm the resident's race, document X: Resident unable to respond.

4. Coding Tips

  • Self-Identification is Key: Always base the racial category on the resident’s self-identification or input from family members if necessary.
  • Multiple Categories: If the resident identifies with multiple racial groups, code each applicable race, including A1010N if "Other Pacific Islander" is mentioned.

5. Documentation

Objective: Accurately record the resident’s racial background to ensure proper demographic tracking and personalized care.

Actions:

  • Document the resident's identification as "Other Pacific Islander" along with any specific details provided.
  • If family members provide the response, record this source in the documentation.

6. Common Errors to Avoid

  • Assumptions Based on Appearance: Do not assume the resident’s race based on physical characteristics. Always verify through direct conversation or reliable family input.
  • Incomplete Documentation: Ensure that if a resident identifies as "Other Pacific Islander," this is clearly marked alongside any other racial categories they select.

7. Practical Application

Example 1:
A resident from Tonga identifies as Tongan. This would be coded as A1010N: Other Pacific Islander.

Example 2:
A resident is unable to respond, but their family confirms they are from Micronesia. This would also be coded as A1010N and X: Resident unable to respond.
