Ace Bandage, Application of

Ace Bandage, Application of 

Purpose: 

  • To provide even firm support. 

  • To reduce pain. 

  • To apply pressure. 

  • To reduce swelling. 

  • To facilitate return circulation from the extremities. 

  • To immobilize a joint. 

Equipment: 

  • Appropriate size Ace bandage as ordered. 

  • Ace fasteners or adhesive tape. 

Procedure: 

  1. Preparation: 

  • Verify the physician’s order for the use of an Ace bandage. 

  • Explain the procedure to the resident to ensure their understanding and cooperation. 

  • Expose the area to be treated and position the resident comfortably to allow access to the area. 

  1. Skin and Dressing Care: 

  • Complete any necessary dressing changes or skin-care procedures. Cleanse and dry the area as needed. 

  1. Bandage Application: 

  • Anchor the bandage by making a circular turn away from you. 

  • Apply the bandage smoothly in a spiral method, ensuring even pressure to avoid occlusion of arteries. 

  • Overlap each layer by half to anchor subsequent rolls with circular turns. 

  • Secure the terminal end with Ace fasteners or adhesive tape. 

  1. Monitoring and Maintenance: 

  • Observe the bandage frequently for wrinkles and uneven pressure. 

  • Check circulation by noting temperature, edema, pulse, and color of distal areas (e.g., toes, fingers). 

  • Remove the bandage by rolling it smoothly over the skin at least every eight hours unless ordered otherwise. 

  • Observe the condition of the skin during bandage removal. 

  • Replace the bandage if it becomes soiled or loses elasticity. 

  1. Documentation: 

  • Document the application of the bandage, including the resident’s response, in the medical record. 

  • Note any observations related to the effectiveness and any adjustments made. 

Compliance and Documentation: 

  • Adhere to CMS guidelines and Requirements of Participation for Long-Term Care Facilities. 

  • Ensure that all procedures are documented accurately in the resident’s care plan. 

  • Regularly review and update the application techniques according to the latest clinical best practices and regulatory standards. 

  • Provide training to staff on the correct application and monitoring of Ace bandages to ensure resident safety and comfort.
