Foot Soak for Resident Sitting Up 

Purpose: 

To stimulate circulation, localize infection, induce suppuration, cleanse an infected area, soften and relax tissues, improve motion in a joint, and relieve pain in the area. 

Policy: 

Foot soaks will be done as ordered by the physician or as indicated on the Resident Care Plan (RCP). 

Equipment: 

  • Wash basin with solution as ordered (usually tap water at 105 degrees F) 

  • Bath blanket 

  • Towel 

  • Straight chair 

Procedure: 

  1. Preparation: 

  • Gather all necessary equipment, including a wash basin, bath blanket, towel, and straight chair. 

  • Ensure the solution temperature is at 105 degrees F. 

  1. Positioning the Resident: 

  • Position the resident sitting either on a chair/wheelchair with their feet on the floor or over the side of the bed with their feet on the chair. 

  • Protect the chair or floor with the towel. 

  • Place the tub of water on the towel and place the resident’s feet into the tub. 

  • Cover the knees, tub, and feet with the blanket to prevent chills. 

  1. During the Foot Soak: 

  • Ensure the resident is comfortable and the tub is secure from tipping. 

  • The usual treatment time is 15 minutes. 

  • Monitor the resident and water temperature, changing water if necessary to maintain the correct temperature. 

  1. Completion: 

  • At the end of the treatment, remove the feet and place them on the towel. 

  • Dry the feet thoroughly, especially between the toes. 

  • Apply moisturizing cream/lotion to the feet, avoiding the area between the toes. Prescription creams or ointments may be applied by licensed personnel if prescribed. 

  • Assist the resident to a comfortable position. 

  1. Post-Treatment: 

  • Clean and disinfect the equipment and the unit. 

  • Document the date and time of the procedure. Additional documentation may include the condition of the feet and the resident’s response to the procedure. 

Compliance and Documentation: 

  • Adhere to CMS guidelines and Requirements of Participation for Long-Term Care Facilities. 

  • Document the foot soak procedure, including the resident’s response and any observations, in their medical record. 

  • Note any abnormalities or difficulties encountered during the foot soak. 

  • Regularly review and update foot soak techniques according to the latest clinical best practices and regulatory standards. 

  • Provide training to staff on proper foot soak procedures to ensure resident safety and comfort. 

  • Conduct regular audits to ensure compliance with this policy and address any gaps in practice or documentation.
