Foot Soak for the Resident on Bedrest

Foot Soak for the Resident on Bedrest 

Purpose: 

To stimulate circulation, localize infection, induce suppuration, cleanse an infected area, soften and relax tissues, improve motion in a joint, and relieve pain in an area. 

Policy: 

Foot soaks will be done as ordered by the physician or as indicated on the Resident Care Plan (RCP). 

Equipment: 

  • Wash basin with solution as ordered 

  • Bath blanket and towel 

  • Pillow with protector 

Procedure: 

  1. Preparation: 

  • Gather all necessary equipment, including a wash basin, bath blanket, towel, and pillow with protector. 

  • Prepare the foot tub and solution. Ensure the solution temperature is at 105 degrees F. 

  • Fold the covers to the foot of the bed, covering the resident with the bath blanket. 

  • Place the pillow under the knees and the bath towel under the feet. 

  • Place the basin of solution on the bath towel and then place the resident's feet in the basin. 

  • Cover the basin with the bath blanket to maintain temperature and privacy. 

  1. During the Foot Soak: 

  • Change the water as needed to maintain the temperature. 

  • Ensure the basin is secure from tipping to avoid spills. 

  1. Completion: 

  • At the end of the treatment, remove the basin and place the resident's feet on the towel. 

  • Dry the feet thoroughly. 

  • Make the resident comfortable and ensure the bed is properly covered. 

  1. Post-Treatment: 

  • Clean and disinfect the equipment and the unit. 

  • Document the date and time of the procedure. Other documentation may include the condition of the skin and the resident’s response to the procedure. 

Compliance and Documentation: 

  • Adhere to CMS guidelines and Requirements of Participation for Long-Term Care Facilities. 

  • Document the foot soak procedure, including the resident’s response and any observations, in their medical record. 

  • Note any abnormalities or difficulties encountered during the foot soak. 

  • Regularly review and update foot soak techniques according to the latest clinical best practices and regulatory standards. 

  • Provide training to staff on proper foot soak procedures to ensure resident safety and comfort. 

  • Conduct regular audits to ensure compliance with this policy and address any gaps in practice or documentation.
