Feeding the Resident (Dependent Eating)

Feeding the Resident (Dependent Eating)

Purpose:

To assist the resident with feeding as necessary and to provide adequate nutrition.

Equipment:

  • Diet as ordered

  • Assistive devices as needed

Procedure:

  1. Preparation:

  • Take the plate to the resident.

  • Place the plate and cup directly in front of the resident.

  • Assist the resident to a proper sitting position unless contraindicated.

  • Assist the resident to place his/her napkin.

  1. Introduction:

  • Inform the resident what is on the tray (e.g., pasta, beef).

  • If the resident cannot see the tray, use the clock method to describe the position of each item (e.g., "peas at 3 o'clock, chicken at 6 o'clock").

  1. Feeding:

  • Cut or divide food into small portions and give the resident a small amount at a time.

  • Do not force the resident to eat. Select foods according to the resident’s appetite and preference.

  • Hold the glass in one hand and the straw in the other when serving liquids with a straw.

  • Alternate between solid food and liquid to facilitate swallowing and digestion.

  1. Post-Meal Care:

  • Wash the resident’s hands and face after meals.

  • Leave the resident in a comfortable position with the call light and water within reach if they are in bed.

Compliance and Documentation:

  • Adhere to CMS guidelines and Requirements of Participation for Long-Term Care Facilities.

  • Document the feeding assistance provided, including the resident’s response and any observations, in their medical record.

  • Note any difficulties encountered during feeding.

  • Regularly review and update feeding techniques according to the latest clinical best practices and regulatory standards.

  • Provide training to staff on proper feeding procedures to ensure resident safety and comfort.

  • Conduct regular audits to ensure compliance with this policy and address any gaps in practice or documentation.
