Elbow Protectors

Elbow Protectors 

Purpose: 

To protect elbows from irritation, prevent pressure and abrasion, prevent breakdown of skin on elbows, and provide comfort for the resident. 

Equipment: 

  • Sheepskin or foam elbow protectors 

  • Moisturizing lotion 

Procedure: 

  1. Initial Observation: 

  • Observe the elbow carefully for any redness, irritation, or break in the skin. 

  1. Preparation: 

  • Wash and dry the elbow well. 

  • Apply moisturizing lotion as care planned. 

  1. Application: 

  • Position the protector with sheepskin or foam covering the bony prominence of the elbow. 

  • Secure the protector well, ensuring it does not impair circulation. 

  1. Monitoring: 

  • Remove the protector and observe skin condition approximately every eight hours. 

  • Check for signs of impaired circulation and condition of the skin. 

  1. If Skin Breakdown Occurs: 

  • Treat as prescribed. 

  • Elbow protectors can be applied over a dressing if necessary. 

Compliance and Documentation: 

  • Adhere to CMS guidelines and Requirements of Participation for Long-Term Care Facilities. 

  • Document the use of elbow protectors, including the resident’s response and any observations, in their medical record. 

  • Note any abnormalities or difficulties encountered during the procedure. 

  • Regularly review and update techniques for applying and monitoring elbow protectors according to the latest clinical best practices and regulatory standards. 

  • Provide training to staff on proper application and monitoring procedures to ensure resident safety and comfort. 

  • Conduct regular audits to ensure compliance with this policy and address any gaps in practice or documentation.
