Drains - Jackson Pratt, Hemovac, and Hys-T-Vac 

Purpose: 

To expedite the healing of a wound by removing fluids that could retard tissue granulation by exerting negative pressure. 

CAUTION: Notify the M.D. if drainage exceeds 60cc per bottle every 4 hours or as per parameters set by the M.D. 

Policy: 

The drainage device is cared for as ordered by the physician, by the licensed nurse who has been trained in the care of such devices. 

Equipment: 

• The resident comes to the facility from the hospital with devices in place. 

Procedure: 

1. General Instructions: 

• To avoid tension on the tubing, attach the Hemovac, Jackson Pratt, or Hys-T-Vac to the resident’s clothing. 

• To maintain the cleanliness of the outlet, cleanse the opening and the plug with an alcohol sponge. 

2. Jackson Pratt: 

• Check every shift or as ordered for fluid entering the device. 

• Empty the device by removing the plug and gently squeezing the fluid out, maintaining sterility. 

• Compress the device tightly and replace the plug, providing the necessary suction to drain the wound. 

3. Hemovac: 

• Check every shift or as ordered for fluid entering the device. 

• Suction will stop when exudate reaches the full mark. 

• Carefully remove the plug, maintaining its sterility; empty the device by squeezing the fluid out of plug "B". 

• After emptying the fluid, press the device tightly and replace plug "B". (Note instructions on Hemovac). 

4. Hys-T-Vac: 

• Check every shift or as ordered for fluid entering the device. 

• Suction will stop when exudate reaches the full mark. 

• Empty the device by squeezing the fluid out of plug "B", maintaining sterility. 

• Keep the device pressed tightly and replace plug "B". 

Documentation: 

• Empty, measure, and record the character and amount of drainage every shift or more frequently if ordered by the physician. 

• Note any abnormalities or issues encountered during the procedure and report them to the physician. 

Compliance and Documentation: 

• Adhere to CMS guidelines and Requirements of Participation for Long-Term Care Facilities. 

• Document the care and maintenance of the drainage devices, including the resident’s response and any observations, in their medical record. 

• Regularly review and update techniques for drain care according to the latest clinical best practices and regulatory standards. 

• Provide training to staff on proper drain care procedures to ensure resident safety and comfort. 

• Conduct regular audits to ensure compliance with this policy and address any gaps in practice or documentation.
