Commode-Use of

Commode, Use of 

 

Purpose: 

To assist the resident with elimination needs while ensuring dignity and privacy. To collect a urine or stool specimen if needed. 

Equipment: 

  • Commode with pail 

  • Tissue 

  • Provon (cleanser) 

  • Washcloth and towel 

  • Slippers/gripper socks 

Procedure: 

  1. Preparation: 

  • Ensure the commode is clean and in proper working order. 

  • Place the commode next to the resident’s bed. Open the cover and insert the container under the toilet seat. 

  • Do not leave a confused resident alone. 

  1. Transferring Resident: 

  • Explain to the resident that you will assist with transferring them onto the bedside commode, as per their care plan and CNA Care Card. 

  • Assist the resident to sit on the side of the bed. 

  • Put slippers or gripper socks on the resident before transferring them onto the bedside commode. 

  1. Using the Commode: 

  • Place toilet tissue and the call light within the resident’s reach. 

  • Ask the resident to signal when finished. 

  • Stay nearby if the resident is confused or requires close supervision. 

  1. Post-Use Assistance: 

  • When the resident signals, return to the room and assist as necessary to clean and wipe, ensuring the anal area is clean. 

  • Assist the resident in transferring back to bed. 

  • Close the cover on the commode. 

  1. Cleaning and Observation: 

  • Remove the container from under the commode. Cover it and take it to the soiled utility room to clean. 

  • Check the feces or urine for any abnormal appearance. 

  • Measure the output if the resident is on intake and output monitoring. 

  • Collect a specimen if required. 

  1. Disposal and Cleaning: 

  • Empty the container into the toilet and flush. 

  • Follow facility procedures for cleaning the container. 

  • Return the clean bedpan to the bedside table and place the commode in its proper location. 

  1. Resident Comfort: 

  • Assist the resident with handwashing. 

  • Make the resident comfortable, lower the head of the bed as necessary, and replace the call signal within reach. 

Compliance and Documentation: 

  • Adhere to CMS guidelines and Requirements of Participation for Long-Term Care Facilities. 

  • Document the use of the commode, including the resident’s response and any observations of abnormal output, in their medical record. 

  • Note any difficulties encountered during the procedure. 

  • Regularly review and update techniques for using commodes according to the latest clinical best practices and regulatory standards. 

  • Provide training to staff on proper commode use procedures to ensure resident safety and comfort. 

  • Conduct regular audits to ensure compliance with this policy and address any gaps in practice or documentation.
