Colostomy: Emptying of Colostomy Bag 

 

Purpose: 

To keep the resident free of odor and ensure the colostomy bag is emptied regularly. 

Policy: 

All residents with ostomies will have their bags emptied daily and as needed. Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) may empty bags with clips. Licensed nurses are responsible for emptying all other types of ostomy bags. 

Procedure: 

  1. Preparation: 

  • Ensure you have the necessary equipment: receptacle, gloves, and any other required items. 

  1. Emptying the Bag: 

  • Place a receptacle under the ostomy bag. 

  • Put on gloves to maintain hygiene and prevent contamination. 

  • Remove the clip from the ostomy bag carefully. 

  • Empty the contents of the bag into the receptacle. 

  • Clean the end of the ostomy bag as needed to prevent odor and maintain hygiene. 

  1. Securing the Bag: 

  • Reapply the clip securely to the ostomy bag. 

  1. Post-Procedure Care: 

  • Dispose of the contents in the receptacle according to facility guidelines. 

  • Wash your hands thoroughly after removing gloves. 

  • Document the procedure in the resident’s medical record, noting the time and any observations. 

Compliance and Documentation: 

  • Adhere to CMS guidelines and Requirements of Participation for Long-Term Care Facilities. 

  • Document the emptying of the colostomy bag, including the resident’s response and any observations, in their medical record. 

  • Note any abnormalities such as unusual color, consistency, or odor of the contents. 

  • Regularly review and update techniques for emptying colostomy bags according to the latest clinical best practices and regulatory standards. 

  • Provide training to staff on proper procedures for emptying colostomy bags to ensure resident safety and comfort. 

  • Conduct regular audits to ensure compliance with this policy and address any gaps in practice or documentation.
