Blind Resident, Caring for

Caring for a Blind Resident 

Purpose: 

To maximize resident communication, provide for safety, and maintain resident dignity. 

Procedure: 

1. Communication and Interaction: 

  • Identify yourself when you arrive. 

  • Announce your intention to leave before you do so. 

  • Speak clearly and slowly, with your mouth directed toward the resident. 

  • Include the resident in conversations and introduce them to others involved in the conversation. 

  • Take the time to explain what is happening around the resident and describe the environment.

  • 2. Assistance and Guidance: 

  • Lead and never push the resident. 

  • Tell the resident when you move an object from a familiar place. 

  • Use the clock placement method to describe the location of each kind of food on a plate. 

  • Go through a door ahead of the blind resident and indicate which way the door opens. 

  • Place the resident’s hand on a chair or bed before they sit. 

  • Stop completely before helping the resident up or down stairs.

  • 3. Safety Measures: 

  • Always ensure that the environment is free of obstacles that may pose a hazard. 

  • Ensure the resident knows where emergency exits and important facilities are located. 

Documentation: 

  • Record the date and time (or shift) as appropriate. 

  • Document how well the resident is able to safely function in their environment and how well they accept their limitations. 

  • Include any specific observations or incidents that occurred during the care period. 

Compliance and Documentation: 

  • Adhere to CMS guidelines and Requirements of Participation for Long-Term Care Facilities. 

  • Ensure all procedures and interactions are documented accurately in the resident’s care plan. 

  • Regularly review and update techniques for caring for blind residents according to the latest clinical best practices and regulatory standards. 

  • Provide training to staff on proper procedures for caring for blind residents to ensure their safety, communication, and dignity. 

  • Conduct regular audits to ensure compliance with this policy and address any gaps in practice or documentation.
