Bath - Parker Bath and Whirlpool Sanitas, Model ST 60D and 70D Whirlpool Bathing System 

Purpose: 

To safely cleanse, stimulate circulation, soothe, and relax the resident by providing a tub/whirlpool bath. 

Equipment: 

  • Resident clothing 

  • Shampoo and body lotion 

  • Washcloth 

  • Towels 

  • Tub chair 

  • Gloves 

  • (Soaps and shampoos must be used as recommended by the manufacturer) 

Procedure: 

  1. Preparation: 

  • Residents may be provided with a tub bath instead of a shower as directed by the charge nurse or IDT. 

  • Frequency of tub bathing will be weekly or more frequently as indicated on the Resident Care Plan (RCP). 

  • If the purpose of the tub/whirlpool is for the treatment of a specific condition, a physician order must be obtained. 

  • All staff members must be in-serviced and demonstrate competency of the procedure before using the mechanical tub independently. 

  • Review the attached operation and procedure manual specific to your tub/whirlpool and follow all safety warnings. 

  • Manufacturer operating procedures must be followed to avoid injuries. 

  • Check the incoming water temperature and the water temperature in the tub before immersing the resident. 

  1. During the Bath: 

  • Prepare the tub room with all necessary supplies and equipment. 

  • Ambulate or transport the resident to the tub area. 

  • Ensure the resident’s privacy throughout the procedure. 

  • The usual bathing time should be 6-8 minutes. Bathing a resident for more than 10 minutes requires a physician order. 

  • Observe the resident for tolerance and discontinue the bath/whirlpool if they become fatigued or complain of discomfort. 

  • Under no circumstances should a resident be left unattended while in the bath tub. 

  1. Post-Bath Procedures: 

  • After the tub bath, follow the manufacturer’s cleaning and disinfectant procedure. 

  • Refer to specific bath/whirlpool guidelines attached for detailed operation and disinfecting procedures. 

  1. Documentation and Monitoring: 

  • Document the procedure, including the resident’s response, in their medical record. 

  • Note any observations related to the resident’s tolerance, skin condition, and overall comfort. 

  • Regularly review and update bathing techniques according to the latest clinical best practices and regulatory standards. 

  • Provide training to staff on the correct procedures for tub/whirlpool baths to ensure resident safety and comfort. 

  • Conduct regular audits to ensure compliance with this policy and address any gaps in practice or documentation. 

Compliance and Documentation: 

  • Adhere to CMS guidelines and Requirements of Participation for Long-Term Care Facilities. 

  • Ensure that all procedures are documented accurately in the resident’s care plan. 

  • Regularly review and update bathing techniques according to the latest clinical best practices and regulatory standards. 

  • Provide training to staff on the correct procedures for tub/whirlpool baths to ensure resident safety and comfort. 

  • Conduct regular audits to ensure compliance with this policy and address any gaps in practice or documentation.
