Walker, Ambulating With Policy 

Purpose 

  • To provide mobility for residents learning to become independent in activities of daily living. 

  • To provide security for residents learning independent activity. 

  • To provide security for residents with gait or balance problems. 

Equipment 

  • Walker of the type required by the resident. 

Procedure 

I. Preparation: 

  • Verify physician’s order. 

  • Adjust the walker height so the resident can stand straight while walking. 

  • Do not use a walker with wheels unless specifically ordered by the physician. 

  • Assist the resident to dress properly, ensuring they wear appropriate footwear. 

II. Assisting the Resident: 

  • Assist the resident to dangle their legs at the side of the bed. 

  • Help the resident to a standing position and instruct them to stand as straight as possible. 

  • Place the walker directly in front of the resident and instruct them to place their hands on the hand grips. 

  • Instruct the resident to use the muscles of their arms and upper body to support their weight. 

III. Ambulating: 

  • Instruct the resident to move the walker and their weaker foot forward approximately six to eight inches. 

  • Ensure the walker is firmly on the floor before the resident shifts their weight onto it. 

  • Instruct the resident to support their weight on the walker and bring their stronger foot forward. 

  • Observe the resident's condition throughout, ensuring they do not become overly tired. 

IV. Assisting After Ambulation: 

  • Assist the resident back to bed or into a wheelchair, instructing them to place their hands on the chair/wheelchair before sitting down. 

  • Leave the resident in a comfortable position with the call light within reach. 

Documentation 

  • Document the resident’s balance, tolerance, and safety awareness during ambulation.
