Transfers -Using the Electric & Mechanical Lift

Transfers – Using the Electric & Mechanical Lift

Purpose

To safely transfer residents who are unable to stand and pivot and/or require lifting to move from bed to chair.

Policy

Electric/mechanical lift transfers will be done with the assistance of two (2) staff members.

Procedure

General Guidelines:

  • Follow the operating and product care instructions specific to the type of lift utilized.

  • Explain the procedure to the resident to ensure they understand and are as comfortable as possible.

  • Ensure the resident's environment is safe and free from obstacles.

Preparation: I. Verify the resident's care plan to ensure the lift transfer is appropriate for the resident's condition.

II. Gather and inspect all necessary equipment, including the lift, sling, and any other required accessories, to ensure they are in good working condition.

III. Ensure the resident is wearing proper footwear to prevent slipping.

IV. Position the lift at the side of the bed or chair to which the resident will be transferred. Ensure the lift is on a flat surface and the brakes are engaged.

Using the Lift: I. Placing the Sling:

  • Position the resident flat on their back if possible.

  • Roll the resident onto their side, placing the sling under them.

  • Roll the resident back onto the sling, ensuring it is centered and flat under them.

  • Raise the head of the bed slightly if necessary to ensure the sling is properly positioned.

II. Attaching the Sling to the Lift:

  • Carefully attach the sling to the lift, ensuring all connections are secure.

  • Adjust the sling straps according to the manufacturer’s instructions and the resident’s needs.

III. Lifting the Resident:

  • Engage the lift motor to raise the resident slowly, ensuring the resident remains comfortable and stable.

  • Pause occasionally to check the resident’s comfort and the stability of the lift and sling.

  • Once the resident is fully lifted, ensure their body is properly aligned.

IV. Transferring to the Chair:

  • Position the chair close to the lift, ensuring the brakes are engaged on both the lift and the chair.

  • Guide the resident gently into the chair, lowering them slowly.

  • Ensure the resident's buttocks are positioned towards the back of the chair.

After the Transfer: I. Removing the Sling:

  • Carefully remove the sling from under the resident once they are securely seated.

  • Ensure the resident is comfortable and properly positioned in the chair.

  • Provide any necessary support, such as pillows or armrests.

II. Safety Checks:

  • Verify that the resident has their call light within reach.

  • Ensure the resident is comfortable and has any necessary personal items within reach.

  • Double-check that the brakes on the chair and lift are engaged.

Documentation: I. Document the transfer in the resident’s medical record, including the date, time, and any observations about the resident’s response to the transfer. II. Note any issues or concerns encountered during the transfer and report them to the supervising nurse. III. Ensure any changes in the resident's condition are documented and communicated to the care team.
