Suprapubic Catheter Care

Suprapubic Catheter Care Policy 

Purpose 

All residents with suprapubic catheters will receive catheter care at the site of insertion at least daily to prevent irritation and possible infection. 

Procedure 

Preparation: 

  1. Explain the procedure to the resident and provide privacy. 

  1. Assemble equipment: clean gloves, basin, warm water, soap. 

  1. Wash hands or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. 

  1. Apply clean gloves. 

Catheter Care: 

  1. Gently cleanse the abdominal insertion site and catheter with warm, soapy water. 

  • Clean in concentric circles, working down the tube away from the insertion site. 

  1. Rinse in the same manner and dry gently. 

  1. Remove gloves and wash hands or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. 

  1. Apply clean gloves. 

  1. Apply a clean dressing as ordered and secure with tape as needed. 

  1. Ensure the resident is comfortable. 

Post-Care: 

  1. Gather used equipment and discard it in appropriate containers. 

  1. Remove gloves and wash hands. 

  1. Document the care given and observations about the condition of the insertion site. 

Documentation 

  • Document the care provided in the resident’s medical record. 

  • Note any observations about the condition of the insertion site, such as redness, swelling, discharge, or other signs of irritation or infection.
