Passing Fresh Drinking Water and Nourishment Policy 

Purpose: To ensure residents receive adequate hydration and supplemental nourishment as needed. 

Procedure: 

I. Equipment: 

  • Water pitchers, cup, straw, ice 

  • Snacks as provided by the Dietary Department 

II. Passing Water: 

  • Water pitchers will be passed to all residents every morning unless contraindicated. 

  • Obtain water pitchers and cups provided by the dietary department. 

  • Fill with ice and water. 

  • Distribute to all residents unless contraindicated, such as those with NPO orders, fluid restrictions, or ice restrictions. 

  • Assist residents in pouring and drinking fluids as needed. 

III. Providing Nourishment: 

  • Snacks will be offered to residents as per dietary guidelines. 

  • Nourishments will be provided by the dietary department as directed by the dietician in compliance with diet orders and the plan of care. 

  • Distribute snacks to residents as indicated and assist as needed. 

  • Report to the charge nurse if a resident refuses nourishment. 

Documentation: 

  • Document the distribution of water and nourishment in the resident's care plan. 

  • Note any refusals and report to the charge nurse for further evaluation and follow-up.
