Oxygen (O2) Filling – Portable Tanks Policy 

Purpose: To ensure the safe and proper filling of portable oxygen tanks by trained staff. 

Procedure: 

I. Staff Competency: 

  • Only staff who have been educated and have demonstrated competency may fill portable oxygen tanks. 

II. Preparation: 

  • Fill portable oxygen tanks in a designated area. 

  • Place an O2 filling sign on the outside of the door. 

  • Ensure the door is closed before beginning the filling process. 

III. Inspection: 

  • Inspect the portable tank for any visible damage. Report any damage to the supervisor and do not fill the tank. 

  • Ensure the rolling tank has at least ¼ O2 left. Report low levels to the supervisor and do not fill the tank. 

IV. Filling Process: 

  • Ensure both the portable tank and rolling tank are turned to 0. 

  • Place the portable unit on top of the reservoir. 

  • Hold the unit down with your hand. 

  • Open the vent lever on the portable unit. 

  • Open and close the vent lever a couple of times during the filling procedure to prevent icing. 

  • Once the portable unit is filled, close the vent lever. 

  • Push the button on top of the reservoir to release the unit. 

  • Lift the unit off the reservoir. 

V. Post-Filling: 

  • Fill out the usage sheet for billing/tracking purposes. 

  • Remove the O2 filling sign from the outside of the door.
