Medication Administration - Otic Drops Policy

Medication Administration - Otic Drops Policy

Purpose:

To ensure safe and effective administration of otic (ear) drops to residents as prescribed, in compliance with CMS guidelines and the State Operations Manual (SOM) for long-term care facilities.

Procedure:

I. Preparation:

  • If medication was refrigerated, allow it to warm to room temperature.

II. Resident Positioning:

  • Instruct the resident to lie down and turn their head with the affected ear in the upward position.

III. Administration:

  • Straighten the auditory canal by holding the auricle upward and backward. Avoid holding too tightly to prevent discomfort.

  • Instill the medication as ordered by the prescriber. Hold the medicine dropper almost horizontal. Support the resident’s head if necessary. Use aseptic technique to prevent contamination.

IV. Post-Administration:

  • Instruct the resident to remain in position for approximately 10 minutes with the affected ear upward.

  • Cleanse reusable items and discard disposable items appropriately.
