Medication Administration via Bladder Instillation Policy 

Purpose: To administer prescribed medication directly into the bladder to treat bladder conditions or infections effectively. 

Procedure for Residents without a Foley Catheter: 

I. Preparation: 

  1. Ensure the resident empties their bladder if they are able. 

  1. Drape the resident to maintain privacy and provide a sterile field. 

II. Foley Catheter Insertion: 

  1. Insert a Foley catheter following the facility's standard procedure. 

  1. Inflate the balloon to secure the catheter in place. 

  1. Drain any residual urine from the bladder. 

III. Medication Instillation: 

  1. Instill the medication according to the physician's order and the pharmacist’s directions. 

  1. Clamp the Foley catheter for the time specified by the physician to allow the medication to remain in the bladder. 

Procedure for Residents with a Foley Catheter: 

I. Preparation: 

  1. Drape the resident to maintain privacy and provide a sterile field. 

II. Residual Urine Drainage: 

  1. Drain any residual urine from the bladder. 

III. Medication Instillation: 

  1. Instill the medication according to the physician's order and the pharmacist’s directions. 

  1. Clamp the Foley catheter for the time specified by the physician to allow the medication to remain in the bladder. 

Documentation: 

I. Record the following information in the resident’s medical record: 

  1. Date and time of medication instillation. 

  1. Type and amount of medication administered. 

  1. Resident’s response to the procedure. 

  1. Any adverse reactions or complications observed. 

**II. Notify the physician immediately if any complications arise during or after the procedure.
