MDS Essentials: Tracking /Discharge MDS: Respite

For respite care within the Minimum Data Set (MDS) 3.0 framework, the following guidelines are provided according to the latest RAI Manual, version 1.18.11, effective October 2023:

  • Respite Care Definition: Respite care is defined as short-term, temporary care provided to a resident, which allows family members to take a break from the daily routine of caregiving.
  • Documentation Requirements:
    • Entry Tracking Record: The nursing home must complete an Entry tracking record for all respite residents to document their admission for respite care.
    • OBRA Discharge Assessment: An OBRA Discharge assessment is required for all respite residents to document the end of their respite stay.
    • Shfacility must also complete an OBRA Admission assessment.

These requirements ensure that respite stays are properly documented within the MDS framework, supporting the continuity of care for respite residents and compliance with federal and state regulations.
