Hair Care

Hair Care

Purpose:

To maintain residents’ sense of well-being through good hygiene and grooming.

Equipment:

  • Towel (if needed)

  • Comb and brush

Procedure:

I. Preparation:

  • Assist the resident if they are able to brush and comb their hair thoroughly. If the resident is not able to do it themselves, perform this procedure gently for them.

  • It may be helpful to place a towel on the pillow or around the shoulders to contain loose hair.

II. Hair Care:

  • For Residents Able to Perform Hair Care:

  • Provide necessary equipment (comb and brush).

  • Offer assistance and supervision as needed to ensure thorough grooming.

  • For Residents Unable to Perform Hair Care:

  • Gently brush and comb the resident’s hair, ensuring to avoid pulling or causing discomfort.

  • Start from the ends and work your way up to prevent tangling.

III. Post-Care:

  • Clean the comb and brush as needed to maintain hygiene.

  • Ensure the resident is comfortable and presentable.

Compliance and Review:

  • Ensure compliance with CMS guidelines and the State Operations Manual (SOM).

  • Regularly review and update procedures based on the latest clinical best practices and regulatory standards.

  • Conduct periodic training for staff on proper hair care techniques for residents.
