Arm Sling

Arm Sling

Purpose:

  • To elevate and support the arm.

  • To reduce edema.

  • To relieve stress on the shoulder or elbow.

  • To immobilize a strained or sprained muscle.

  • To immobilize a fracture.

  • To facilitate return circulation from the extremities.

  • To relieve pain.

Equipment:

  • Arm sling (or type of commercial device used in your facility).

  • Fastener, if necessary.

Procedure:

  1. Application:

  • Explain the procedure to the resident to ensure understanding and cooperation.

  • Apply the sling to the affected arm by placing the arm in the cloth sling with the elbow in the closed corner of the sling.

  • Adjust the strap around the neck so that the elbow is bent at a right angle, and the fingers are slightly elevated above the level of the elbow.

  • Ensure that the end of the fingers extends just beyond the base of the sling.

  1. Monitoring:

  • Observe the color and temperature of the fingers to ensure adequate circulation.

  • Remove the sling periodically to assess the skin condition and circulation.

  1. Post-Application Care:

  • Assist the resident to a comfortable position with the call light within reach on the unaffected side.

  • Provide any additional support or padding as needed to ensure comfort and prevent pressure points.

Compliance and Documentation:

  • Adhere to CMS guidelines and Requirements of Participation for Long-Term Care Facilities.

  • Document the application of the arm sling, including the resident’s response, in the medical record.

  • Note any observations related to circulation, skin condition, and any adjustments made.

  • Regularly review and update techniques and protocols for the use of arm slings according to the latest clinical best practices and regulatory standards.

  • Provide training to staff on the correct application and monitoring of arm slings to ensure resident safety and comfort.

  • Conduct regular audits to ensure compliance with this policy and address any gaps in practice or documentation.
