MDScare Nursing Home Call Light Policy

Purpose:

This Call Light Policy aims to ensure the prompt and efficient response to residents' calls for assistance while maintaining the proper functioning of call systems.

Equipment:

  1. Bedside call light in functioning order.
  2. Emergency call light in functioning order.

Procedures:

  1. All MDScare Nursing Home personnel must be vigilant and aware of call lights at all times.
  2. Answer ALL call lights promptly, irrespective of your resident assignment.

Bedside Call Lights:

  1. When a resident activates the bedside call light, a light and a sound will be triggered, appearing both over the resident's room door and on the nursing station board.
  2. Turn off the call light at the point of origin by pushing the switch up or depressing the ring around the button that activates the call light.
  3. Respond to all bedside call lights promptly, maintaining a calm and courteous demeanor. Turn off the call light as soon as you enter the room.
  4. Always ensure residents feel prioritized; offer further assistance before leaving the room.
  5. Position the call light conveniently for the resident to use while providing care. Instruct the resident on the location and usage of the call light.

Orientation for New Residents:

  1. Orient all new residents to the use of the bedside call light and the call light in the bathroom, shower, or tub rooms. Have the resident demonstrate the call light's usage to confirm their understanding.

Maintenance and Reporting:

  1. Report any defective call lights immediately to the charge nurse. If immediate repair is not possible, provide a "tap" bell as an alternative.
  2. Log all defective call lights in the maintenance log, including their exact location.

Safety Reminder:

12. Always keep call lights on the bed at all times; never place them on the floor or bedside.
