Calm and Organized Environment: Management of Behavioral Symptoms

  1. Labeling: Use signs, pictures, or other objects that remind residents of where they are or what they need to do. This can help residents navigate their surroundings and reduce confusion. It is important to use high contrast black and white pictures instead of words and place all labels at handicap height for easy visibility.

  2. Reduce distractions: Reduce intercoms, unattended TVs, buzzers, or other background noise that can be overwhelming for residents. Consider placing people who are confused by large groups in small groups for eating or other activities. Remove mirrors, confusing signs, and wall coverings with busy patterns that can be confusing and overstimulating for residents. Additionally, place residents who are sensitive to noise in rooms with quiet locations.

By creating a comfortable and organized environment, residents will feel more at ease and able to navigate their surroundings with ease.
